BIG EVENTS...
I love big events. I'm a big event planning type of guy. I love seeing a huge crowd, especially in a praise and worship kind of setting. So I'm wishing I could be going to YC this weekend, which is a fabulous thing.
However, at times I think we as the 'church' puts too much into the big event, and sacrifice the real community we need. Big events are relatively easy...real community is messy and hard; it takes a lot of time.
As I think about youth ministry in Saskatewan, my struggle has been 'how can we create real communty in groups/towns/villages'? I think effective youth ministry needs both the big events and the real communites. I think of what makes summer camp so powerful, and I think it happens best when they have great community (in cabin groups, where deep sharing, caring and interaction takes place) and they also have a great 'worship event' otherwise called chapel, where the 'communites' gather together to ignite enthusiasm and energy into the lives. Just my simple thoughts...

On that same line of thinking, here's a good article on what kills community from the Youth Specialties website:
